Service and Outreach

Using our hands to offer our hearts

At St. James UCC, there are several mission projects that are particularly near and dear to our hearts. There are populations we seek to serve and support, and there are issues we seek to solve by being active participants in the work that needs to be done.

It is great to talk about the needs of the world, and it's great to offer funds to those who already know how to heal the wounds and need all around us; however, as followers of Jesus, it is most important for us to help do the work of serving others and reaching out to the world. Currently we work with several organizations, both national and international, to address issues of hunger, homelessness, and poverty, including Providence Farm Collective, House of HopeFamily Promise of Western New York, Heifer International, Help One Help All (in Haiti), and Habitat for Humanity.

We also participate in special local projects, such as providing backpacks and school supplies for the children at Buffalo Peace House, purchasing holiday gifts for families in need through the Hamburg School District, CROP Hunger Walk, Undie Sunday (with Churches in Action), and the Mitten Tree project (which helps local families in need stay warm).

Offering support to the Village of Hamburg and beyond

St James UCC has been an active and important part of the Village of Hamburg and the areas surrounding Hamburg. St. James UCC contributes regularly to the Main Street beautification project in the Village of Hamburg, helping to keep our community look friendly and welcoming. And St. James UCC participates in village-sponsored festivals, such as Hamburg BurgerFest and Flavor of Hamburg, offering smiles, hospitality, children’s activities, and free refreshments. During the November storm of 2014, St. James UCC donated numerous jars of handmade soup to feed police and rescue forces, as well as those whom they found in need or stuck in their homes without food.

St. James UCC, under the leadership of Rev. Roger Horton, helped establish and support the Hamburg Counseling Center back in 1972.

Supporting the work of outreach organizations

Through the generosity of our congregation with donations and bequests, St. James UCC is able to offer funding to numerous organizations who are already effectively filling a need in the community, nation, or world. These organizations and special projects are best equipped and specifically trained to offer certain outreach and relief work. We participate in their outreach by providing financial support to fund the work they do. Currently, St. James UCC contributes funding through annual grants to:

  • Heifer International

  • Providence Farm Collective

  • #feedhamburg

  • Help One Help All (a small mission organization in Haiti)

  • Hamburg Central Schools Thanksgiving meals

  • Samaritan Counseling Center

Supporting the ministries of the United Church of Christ

St. James UCC is proud to be a "5 for 5" church in the United Church of Christ. This means that we contribute to all five of the UCC special mission offerings that support the work and special projects sponsored by the denomination – Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM), One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, Strengthen the Church, and the Christmas Fund. These funds are supported through member pledges and four special offerings taken throughout the year.
